Quality wood flooring is a term you will hear a great deal of the time when you are redecorating a home, or building a new home. Many people advocate the installation of quality wood flooring because this type of floor is long lasting and will increase the value of the property. But, what exactly is it?

Wood Flooring

Quality wood flooring is floors that are constructed of solid wood. You have new types of floors that are pieces of wood that are pressed, and glued together, and then shaped into a board. These floor boards will not hold up as long as solid wood boards do. A high quality floor board is a solid board cut from a tree, and will have very few knot holes, or blemishes in it.

Wood FlooringSolid boards can withstand extreme temperature changes. When the carpenter lays the boards in place they will pull them close to each other. Over time the moisture in the board will evaporate, causing the board to shrink, and this will leave small cracks between the floor boards. Solid wood floor boards can withstand high humidity, being mopped regularly, high traffic, and dry conditions.

Floor boards made of pressed together shavings will come apart if they are subjected to high humidity levels, or to heavy mopping with soapy water. Laminates, particle board, and composite boards, are examples of pressed together floor boards.

Hardwood trees are used most frequently to produce high quality floor boards. Your hardwood trees are the ones that lose their leaves in the fall, like the oak trees do. Hickory is occasionally used because this is a very hard wood. The hard wood makes it harder to damage the board. Softer wood that comes from pine trees, ash trees, and birch trees, can be damaged more easily, but they still make excellent floors.

Boards cut from cypress trees, and cedar trees, are beautiful, and they are more capable of withstanding moisture. They are excellent to use in areas where the humidity is constantly high.

They are also great boards to use in areas that are prone to insects like the termite. Termites do not like wood from the cypress tree, or the cedar tree. Fleas also avoid these types of wood.

Quality boards are solid boards, boards that have few blemishes like knot holes, and boards that are best suited for the area you live in.
